CMS Uniform Policy

The Uniform for Coastal Middle School is as follows: 

The purpose of our dress code is to ensure an atmosphere conducive to learning and safety.

Students must be dressed appropriately at all times. The school administration reserves the right to determine whether any student is dressed inappropriately and to take action to correct the infraction. Students who arrive at school inappropriately dressed will be offered one of the following options:

-To change clothes and remain at school

-To be isolated for the day

-To return home

The Uniform for Coastal Middle School is as follows:

Shirts: Solid white, navy, light blue, and grey polo or oxford style collared tops may be worn. No emblems or logos except for the Coastal Middle School logo are acceptable. All undershirts, or any attire worn under the uniform top, must be solid white. Solid white or solid navy turtle neck shirts may be worn in winter months.

Tops may not be tight or revealing. Shirts must be tucked in at all times. NEW - Students may purchase a coastal blue or navy blue Spirit Wear shirt and wear untucked any day with uniform bottoms. CMS spirit wear shirts may only be worn with blue jeans on designated Spirit Wear days. Students may also purchase a school approved spirit wear hoodie that can be worn any day of the week. 

Pants/Shorts: Solid navy, black, or khaki bottoms that fit as a pair of slacks may be worn. Bottoms must be made of standard uniform material – no denim, spandex, leggings, or corduroy. No cargo style pants, athletic types of pants, pants with elastic at the ankles, or pants with side pockets may be worn. Official CMS spirit wear sweatpants purchased from the spirit store may be worn on approved spirit days. Pants must be worn at the natural waistline but may not fit tightly. Bottoms must have a finished hem and be no shorter than 3 inches above the student’s knee.

Belts: Black or brown, always properly fastened around the natural waist, and worn inside the belt loops. Belts must have a standard buckle.

Skirts and Jumpers: Solid navy, solid khaki, or “classic navy plaid” skirts or jumpers with a finished hem may be worn. Skirts must be worn with collared uniform shirts and may be no more than 3 inches above the student’s knee. Plaid skirts (Coastal blue/gold) may also be worn. Be sure these are the correct pattern and color before purchasing. Updated for the 2026-2027 school year-Skirts purchased from the previous spirit wear vendor during SY 2025–2026 will be phased out and will no longer be permitted next school year. Tennis skirts will not be permitted.

Shoes: Shoes must have enclosed toes and heels. No backless shoes or crocs are permitted. Athletic shoes must be properly tied at all times.

Socks, Tights, and Leggings: Solid white, solid black, or solid navy blue socks, tights, and leggings may be worn.

Outerwear: All jackets, sweaters, vests, and other types of outerwear worn over the uniform must be solid navy to be worn inside the building. Official CMS spirit wear hoodies are approved, and non-approved hoodies are not permitted.

Book Bags, Purses, and Athletic Bags: Any type of bag carried that is large enough to hold a standard size notebook must be made of clear plastic or mesh. This includes athletic bags.

ID Badge: All students will be issued a photo ID badge at the beginning of the school year. The ID badge must be worn on a lanyard around the student’s neck throughout each school day. Lost or damaged ID badges must be replaced immediately at a cost of $5.00.

Hair Color – No extreme hair color is permitted. Examples include, but are not limited to, blue, green, pink, and purple.

Make-Up and Jewelry – Make-up and jewelry should be minimal and not distracting.

Body Piercing – Body and facial piercing is not permitted.

Accessories - Hats, headdresses, bandanas, Bluetooth devices and sunglasses are not permitted.

Non-Uniform and Spirit Wear Dates

Spirit Wear - For a one-dollar donation, students and staff may wear full-length blue

jean pants with their uniform shirt, or CMS spirit wear T-shirt on designated Fridays.

Students may also wear non-uniform spirit wear socks. Clothing may not

appear to be torn or written upon. Proceeds will go to a specified organization or

charity.

Non-Uniform Days – – Each Wednesday a student may redeem shells to purchase a

dress down day. Students may then come out of uniform adhering to dress down

requirements outlined in the district’s Code of Conduct.

Families are strongly encouraged to pay for all 35 days at once using School Cash Net.
